Virtualisation Assessment

SunGard’s Virtualisation Assessment service determines what hardware and applications can be optimized through virtualisation

Service Overview
Virtualisation provides many benefits, including reducing costs for power and cooling, reducing overall data centre space requirements, supporting data centre relocations and the requirement to consolidate servers and storage, which in turn support green IT initiatives.

SunGard’s Virtualisation Assessment service determines what hardware and applications can be optimized through virtualisation. The comprehensive analysis identifies the benefits, and the risks in virtualising an environment, and allows you to build the business case for adopting the technology.

The Benefits
The Virtualisation Assessment service gives you:

  • The expertise and experience of our virtualisation consultants;
  • An understanding of what can be achieved through virtualisation;
  • Identification of servers that can be virtualised and those that can’t;
  • An idea of what the virtual environment would look like;
  • Indication of potential cost savings from virtualisation.

What does it involve?

  • A SunGard Consultant will contact you to organise a site visit to understand the business drivers and objectives for virtualisation.
  • A site visit will be arranged to run the software to capture inventory and performance data from all servers in scope. SunGard utilise this tool to obtain server configuration and utilisation information enabling us to establish base total resource requirements.
  • The monitoring period is usually set to ensure the tool captures capacity data over a period of time that incorporates customer batch processes to capture periods of maximum resource utilisation.
  • SunGard will produce a single report which includes the following:
    • A list of all discovered server assets
    • Validation of which servers can be virtualised and those that cannot
    • Summary of the ‘to be’ hardware configuration and an initial mapping of virtual servers to hosts
    • Comment on the required amount of storage in the ‘to be’ environment
    • Comment on the LAN / VLAN integration in the ‘to be’ environment (highlighting any potential design constraints)
    • Comment on Firewall integration (highlighting any potential design constraints)
    • A finalised fixed price SoW for Design phase
